The Child Neurology Foundation (CNF) is a highly innovative, impact-focused nonprofit organization that works to improve the lives of children and their families living with neurologic conditions. Based in Lexington, Kentucky, the organization serves thousands of children and families across all 50 states and in over 70 countries around the world, providing vital resources so that these children with chronic conditions and disabilities can thrive and fulfill their potential. CNF's research grants, family grants, medical symposiums and other programs have positioned the organization as the leader in this field, convening the voices, minds and passions of families, physicians, teachers, caregivers, and researchers to change the conditions of care and the continuum of care for these young lives.

With a mission and services unlike any other, CNF has grown significantly over the last few years and has a plan to continue that growth. With a current budget of $3.7M, the organization is crafting a 3-year strategic plan to activate and expand the child neurology community, thus innovating treatment, increasing accessibility to quality care, and ensuring that no child and family living with a neurologic condition feels alone.


Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Director of Development (DOD) will create and implement a robust fund development plan to support the CNF’s short- and long-term fund development goals. The organization has been expanding steadily and is now seeking to dramatically accelerate this growth with an experienced and strategic fundraising professional.

To bolster CNF's individual, foundation, and corporate giving endeavors, the ideal candidate will have superb communication and relationship-building skills. This individual will increase funding through building funder relationships, prospecting new donors, strengthening the donor data management practices, and implementing a cohesive donor cultivation strategy including the design of special donor events. A developer by nature, this individual will use their experience in building effective development teams and fundraising for growth, thus leading the way in helping CNF further achieve its mission and vision.


Development Strategy & Leadership

  • Works in conjunction with the CEO and other key staff to develop and implement a comprehensive, long- and short-term development plan to strengthen CNF’s financial position in accordance with its mission, goals and objectives
  • Engage and work collaboratively with all members of the staff to support fundraising efforts and to continue strengthening CNF's culture of philanthropy
  • Collaborate with the CEO to maximize board engagement as it relates to fundraising
  • Oversee all aspects of development management and operations with the support of the full staff and make enhancements to systems as needed
  • Hire, onboard and manage development staff and provide fundraising related training and coaching to other staff and volunteers

Individual & Institutional Giving

  • Work with the team to cultivate and steward CNF’s current supporters including, but not limited to, the Corporate Advisory Board, corporate sponsors, individual donors, event attendees, families, providers, and more
  • Identify, research and qualify individual, corporate and foundation prospects to build a meaningful pipeline
  • Develop and sustain a moves management structure to effectively move donors through a meaningful cycle of giving
  • Manage a portfolio of major donors being actively engaged, stewarded and solicited by team members, designing individual cultivation plans as needed
  • Assure that all commitments, contributions, information, interactions, and donor communications are accurately and timely entered in the database
  • Design, implement and evaluate all individual giving campaigns including sustaining donors, legacy giving, holiday giving, etc.

Community Outreach & Communications

  • Oversee CNF’s donor and prospective donor communications strategy with support from external marketing  team and Development Coordinator
  • Collaborate on the design and production for all external facing communications including donor specific collateral
  • Work closely with CEO to design and lead appropriate fundraising strategy at events specified by CEO
  • Serve as a brand champion for the foundation

  • At least 4 years’ progressive experience in a fund development role
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations or relevant field
  • Demonstrated excellence in donor identification, qualification, cultivation and stewardship resulting in a robust pipeline of prospective donors and in new and increased levels of giving
  • Demonstrated passion for best practices; successfully creating and implementing innovative donor centric development tactics and strategies
  • Detailed knowledge of planned giving techniques, donor prospect identification, qualification, tracking, and donor databases
  • Strategic know-how for building a small organization’s national major giving program is required
  • Strong planning and budgeting skills are required
  • Ability to improve departmental processes and procedures
  • Proven to be highly motivated, self-directed, results-oriented, and most energized in a fast paced, multi- tasked environment
  • Advanced computer literacy in database management, Microsoft Office, and donor/fundraising software (such as eTapestry or Raisers Edge)
  • Experience presenting visual data using dashboards and PowerPoint
  • Excellent verbal and written and interpersonal communication skills are required
  • Experience working effectively with executive level staff, Boards, and busy/high wealth individuals
