Description

Mayo Clinic’s Department of Neurosurgery in Jacksonville, Florida, led by Richard W. Byrne, M.D., is seeking a boardcertified or boardeligible neurosurgeon with fellowship training in surgical epilepsy and stereotactic & functional neurosurgery.

The successful candidate will join the Department of Neurosurgery within the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science, an academic tertiarycare program committed to excellence in patient care, research, and education.

Clinical Focus & Expertise

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated expertise in advanced functional neurosurgical procedures, including:

• Epilepsy surgery
• Deep brain stimulation (DBS) for movement disorders
• Stereotactic radiosurgery
• Surgical treatment of pain syndromes

Strong clinical skills and a patientcentered approach are essential.

Academic & Research Expectations

Required:

• Demonstrated academic productivity in research and/or medical education
• Commitment to teaching medical students, residents, and surgical fellows
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team

Preferred:

• Participation in stereotactic and functional neurosurgery clinical trials
• Development of an independent or collaborative research program
• Consideration for leadership roles based on experience and academic rank

Department & Practice Environment

The Department of Neurosurgery includes 12 faculty neurosurgeons and hosts a neurosurgery residency program with two residents per year. The Florida campus completes over 2500 neurosurgical cases each year.

Collaborative clinical and research opportunities are encouraged across all Mayo Clinic locations and offer exposure to one of the nation’s largest neurosurgical clinical volumes between the Arizona, Minnesota, Florida, and Mayo Health System campuses.

This growth includes the addition of a new fivestory patient tower, bringing the campus to 419 total beds, and the integration of advanced medical and surgical technologies designed to enhance patient and staff experience.

In July 2025, the campus opened the Duan Family Building, a 228,000squarefoot facility that will house the first carbon ion therapy program in the Western Hemisphere, with patient treatments anticipated to begin in 2028 pending FDA approval.

Requirements

• Board Eligible or Board Certified in Neurosurgery (ABNS)
• Eligible for Florida medical licensure
• Midcareer and seniorlevel candidates are preferred; however, exceptional candidates at all career stages will be considered
