UTHealth Houston - Department of Neurology
Founded in 1972, the UTHealth Houston Department of Neurology initially began with its first chair, Dr. William Fields, heading a department of only six faculty members. Since then, the department has grown exponentially, expanding the specialty programs to the areas of Epilepsy, Movement Disorders, Multiple Sclerosis, Neuromuscular Diseases, Neurocognitive Disorders, Brain Disorder Research, Diagnostic Neurology, and Stroke.
The Department offers training programs, research activities, a clinical practice, as well as a highly competitive Neurology residency program along with several specialty-specific fellowship programs. The Department is ranked #14 for NIH Funding among Clinical Science Departments at US Medical Schools and the research program is funded by many NIH grants and attracts collaborators from all over the globe. The UT Physicians Neurology clinical practice remains one of the busiest and most comprehensive Neurology clinical practices in the city of Houston, staffed by some of the top experts in Neurology. The Department of Neurology is comprised of more than 500 FTEs, including 67 clinical faculty, 48 research faculty and more than 70 trainees.
Position Summary
The next Chair for the Department of Neurology will be a nationally recognized scholar and leader in academic medicine, one who is passionate about the mission, vision, and values of UTHealth Houston and has a deep understanding of academic health science centers and how they succeed in an evolving health care environment. This person will be able to articulate a compelling vision for the future of Neurology across a highly regarded school of medicine, health system, and to the community in general and bring a deep understanding of current issues and trends in neurology care, education and research – and the experience necessary to transform current practices. The ideal candidate is a "systems thinker" who can navigate organizational, political, and fiscal realities unique to a major public research university, and make changes to improve current practice, including effective advocacy for the resources required to uphold mandates and achieve aspirations.
Education
Candidates must hold an MD, MD/PhD or equivalent. Candidates must be board certified in Neurology and eligible for a faculty appointment at the Professor/Associate Professor level.
